I grew up in the tropics, in a small group of islands called Vanuatu in the Pacific. Bird of Paradise flowers were commonplace there, but in the UK people grow Strelitzia in their hothouses. In the warm climate of Cornwall where I live now, the plants are moved outdoors during the summer months. I met an elderly couple in Newquay recently who had 30 plants, which started off as a tiny cutting from her mother. This design originally started off as a bespoke request from one of my regular customers, who was looking for a tropical feel to her lounge, and it is rapidly becoming one of my best sellers.

My designs are inspired by living in Cornwall, walking along the coastline and the unique Cornish hedgerows, foraging for season treats, fishing and growing fruit and veg. Last year on a day trip over to the Isles of Scilly we picked up a bag of daffodil bulbs from a roadside kiosk. They were the most beautiful blooms that arrived early in time for Christmas, and the scent is so evocative of early spring.

When I was growing up in Vanuatu we had one of these glorious trees in our garden. It is also called a Christmas Tree as it flowers at Christmas time. My parents built an orchid house around it to grow their orchid collection, and my job as a kid was to help water them, one of those evening rituals, the memory of it is evoking smells of the end of a hot tropical day and family time together. It is weird how memories and smells are closely linked.

You can tell that Spring is really on the way when the creamy white blossom starts to appear on the dark branches of the Blackthorn trees. In late Summer early Autumn, we head out to pick the sloe berries on Cornish hedgerows to make our Christmas sloe gin.

The fabric has been printed in the UK with my original Ginkgo leaf design. My design started off as an illustration and watercolour, inspired by the distinctive shaped leaves I picked up from under a magnificent Ginkgo biloba tree. The tree had shed a carpet of glorious yellow and golden colour leaves. The Ginkgo biloba is a very ancient tree, and the leaves have medicinal properties.

Bold bright florals which bring the outside indoors and give a cheerful accent to 2021 interiors. Verbena bonariensis is one of my favourite flowering plants in the garden, it starts flowering in early spring and keeps going until autumn, self seeding and producing new baby plants again for next year. It looks stunning in coastal gardens alongside swishy long ornamental grasses.

Walking along the pathway that runs alongside The Gannel estuary in Newquay is a Passionflower vine that flowers for most of the summer, winding its tendrils through the hedgerow. One Christmas it was still in flower! I wonder how it got there, not a native to the Cornish hedges! If you are ever in Lizard Village see if you can find the plant nursery off the main car park, they have so many different varieties of Passiflora!
