My Puffin illustration was part of a Seabirds of Cornwall print, and makes a lovely graphic statement in any coastal home decor. You can spot Puffins on the Cornish coastline between Rock and Padstow and on the Isles of Scilly.

Silver Darlings designer lampshade
My Silver Darlings illustration started out as a commission for a birthday present for a wonderful lady who is a talented musician and who had just published a book called Silver Darlings. Silver Darlings tells the story of the lives of the people who followed the herring shoals along the north east coast of England from Lindisfarne to Lowestoft. I make all my lampshades myself by hand, from my base in Cornwall. There is a delivery time of three weeks which allows me to get my illustrations printed onto fabric printed and for me to make the shade.

When I was illustrating the artwork for the lampshade commission I found out more about the “Herring Girls” who would clean and salt the herrings in barrels. Whilst their work was really hard, their freedom to travel away from home and earn money gave them independence and a sense of community in an era when women were supposed to stay at home and look after husbands and children. The Silver Darlings were the herring fish, and my illustration is how I imagined them, swooping through nets and escaping to freedom, just like the Herring Girls. 🐟🐟🐟🐟

On my mum’s 70th birthday our whole family took a fishing boat trip from Newquay Harbour, and caught several different types of fish, which we took home and barbequed in the garden. I created a screen print from my illustrations of this event, and eventually the design has evolved into this lampshade design.

My designs are inspired by living in Cornwall, walking along the coastline and the unique Cornish hedgerows, foraging for season treats, fishing and gardening.
Pebbles has been inspired by my walks along Fistral Beach, wandering along the strand line to pick up the quartz veined grey pebbles. I always look out for the ones that have crossed veins, they are my favourite and remind me of the St Piran flag, the patron saint of Cornwall.

Seashells – printed from my Dog Cockles illustration, inspired by my dog walks on Fistral Beach in Newquay, Cornwall. The strandline is where the sea meets the sand, and I love beachcombing for interesting shells and pebbles amongst the flotsam and jetsam which is washed up. The Dog Cockles look like they have been hand painted by the sprites of the sea, each one is unique and marked with irregular orange shapes through to blues and browns.

My illustrations are inspired by my family’s bellyboarding heritage. My grandparents both grew up in Perranporth in Cornwall, and my grandmother’s family started surfing and making wooden boards after the First World War. I remember my great Uncle Arthur taking his wooden belly board down to the beach at Perranporth when he was well into his 70s!
The World Bellyboard Championships are organised by the National Trust and take place in Cornwall each year in September. No wetsuits are allowed and prizes are won for the best outfits, which involve a lot of flowery hats, fifties swimsuits and all in one knitted stripey costumes for the men which sag upon contact with water.
I went to boarding school in Cornwall, and during half term holidays my Granny Tamblyn would occupy my brothers and me by showing us her family albums of photos taken on the beach, pointing out the faces and names of gangs of cousins, great uncles, aunties once removed (whatever that means) near the beach huts that no longer exist, from summers long, long ago. I’ve got a lovely photo of my grandparents dressed up in their woollen swimsuits.
